Freshman Luis Fernandez Labarta Captures His First Collegiate Event

Florida Atlantic University's men's tennis team participated in the 51^st Annual Southern Intercollegiate last weekend. The team saw individuals shine throughout the three-day event, but it was freshman Luis Fernandez Labarta who walked away with the Compass Draw III Quadrant D Championship.

Fernandez Labarta had a first round bye won his second in three sets and the final two in two. He teamed with Ivan Morin-Kougoucheff to win one of two doubles matches.

"I am extremely proud of Luigi's (Luis) performance this past weekend, said Head Men's Tennis Coach Ricardo Gonzales. "I learned a few things from him immediately. Luigi is a fighter. He knows how to win ugly, and he loves the battle. I know he will win some big matches for our team this season."

Fellow freshman Kirac Bekisoglu also had a big weekend. In in his first collegiate contest with three single wins. He won the first after battling the first collegiate set to win 7-6. He dropped the second and was up 5-2 in the third when his opponent retired. He went on to win his next two matches as well as two of three doubles contests teaming with Gabriel Sidney.

"Kirac (Bekisoglu) is an impressive all-around player," added Gonzalez. I was happy with his performance this weekend and I am confident that he will continue to get good results. Kirac is coachable and has big weapons that can continue to develop."

The Owls will next compete in the ITA All-American in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Sept. 28-30.
