Doubles Finalists Alvaro Fernandez Horta and Thomas Guy

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University men's tennis team played in the 2018 Bedford Cup last weekend on the courts of the USTA National Campus. Luis Fernandez Labarta captured another victory in his singles flight, and sophomore Thomas Guy and freshman Alvaro Fernandez Horta became finalists in their men's doubles flight.

Fernandez-Labarta kept the momentum rolling from his first collegiate victory at the Southern Intercollegiate by knocking off each of his five opponents in two sets. The freshman remains undefeated in collegiate play.

"This guy is a competitor," said Head Men's Tennis Coach Ricardo Gonzales. "He is gritty, has a big heart and never gives up. I am extremely happy on another great weekend for him. He has improved tremendously in a short period of time, but still has many parts of his game that can continue to develop. We will continue to work."

The Guy and Horta duo also had a great weekend, qualifying for their flight finals. They got past three opponents to make it to the final stage, but fell short to Felipe Escobar and Mateo Ruiz (FGCU) in the finals 8-3.

"Good chemistry is the first thing that comes to mind when I think about these two," said Gonzales. "This is a key element in doubles and this duo definitely has this. They bring a lot of positive energy to the table and balance each other out very well. I was impressed with their play throughout the tournament. We need to continue to work on many small details and clean up some of the mistakes that we made this weekend, but we are definitely taking steps in the right direction."

Senior Gabriel Sidney made it to the quarterfinals in his flight after defeating each of his three opponents in two sets. Sidney fell short in the quarterfinals to Alan Rubio (UCF) in three sets.

"Gabe continues to do a good job leading this team on and off the court," said Gonzales. "He has been playing very good tennis and I'm happy with his performance this weekend. I have no doubt he will continue to get better."

The Owls will compete next in the ITA Regionals in Athens, Georgia, Oct. 18-21.
