BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic University women's soccer and No. 17 Baylor played even for 80 minutes, but the lone goal of the match came during that late timeframe by the visiting Bears, and they held off the Owls Sunday night by a 1-0 score.
Turning Point:
Prior to the score, the game was played very evenly and mostly between the boxes. The game-winner saw a long strike to the right side, and eventually possession was corralled by Kennedy Brown of the Bears (3-1-0), who shot over a charging Jennifer Ocampo to find the net.
The Finish:
The Owls (1-3-0) had one more shot attempt and two corners in the final 9:29 of action, but could not knot the match back up. Baylor's second goalkeeper, Jennifer Wandt, did not have to record a save after the break to pick up the win.
Quotable:
"It's a little unfortunate (but) I'm proud of our team," said Head Coach Patrick Baker of the result. "I'm proud of how we schemed for tonight's game; I thought we did a great job following the gameplan … Disappointing, but I'm proud of the effort and the focus that we had tonight. We gave ourselves a chance, you're playing a nationally-ranked team at home, and you've got 15 minutes left, and you just know that whoever scores first probably is going to win it there. Unfortunately, that was them."
