BOCA RATON, Fla. – As July has come to a close, so too will the summer league baseball season in the coming weeks. Ten Florida Atlantic University baseball players, that were on the team last year, plied their trade for various summer ball teams in five different leagues these last couple of months.
Here's a look at how these Owl returnees have done so far across the country this summer:
CAPE COD LEAGUE (Still in progress)
Pedro Pages, Hyannis Harbor Hawks
In 34 games, Pages is hitting .252 with three home runs and 17 RBI, third on the team in each of the latter two categories. He was named a Cape Cod League All-Star, starting at catcher for the West Team and drawing two at-bats in the game on July 22. Ten times this summer, he has notched a multi-hit game, including a 3-for-5 showing in a win over Orleans on July 30.
Eric Rivera, Hyannis Harbor Hawks
Rivera is third on the Harbor Hawks in on-base percentage (.393) and ties for the team's lead in walks (21, fourth in the league) and stolen bases (10, also tied for first among all Cape Cod players). In the same win on July 30 where his teammate Pages was 3-for-5, Rivera went 2-for-3 with two walks and scored three runs. In an earlier win over Chatham, on July 18, he went 5-for-5, hitting a home run, scoring twice and knocking in three runs.
Mike Ruff, Bourne Braves
Ruff is the Braves' team leader with four wins, sporting a 4-1 record and a 3.86 ERA in 11 relief appearances (second on the team). The rising junior righthander has nearly a 2:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio, 15 to 8, and five of his last six appearances have been scoreless, including two wins.
Zach Schneider, Brewster Whitecaps
The Owls' closer last season, Schneider has three multi-inning appearances for the Whitecaps, going at least two innings in each game. He picked up a win in the middle contest, a scoreless 2 1/3-inning stint with four strikeouts. Overall, in 7 2/3 innings, he is 1-0 with a 2.34 ERA, nine strikeouts against just three walks, and batters are hitting only .226 against him.
CAL RIPKEN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL LEAGUE (Season complete)
Jordan Poore, Bethesda Big Train
Poore had four outings out of the bullpen in the regular season for the Big Train, allowing just two runs in 12 innings, with 11 strikeouts and only two walks. He picked up a win over the D.C. Grays on July 18, going a season-high four innings, striking out six versus just a walk, and giving up only a run. The Big Train had the CRCBL's best overall regular season record, of 34-6, winning the South Division and were eventually named Co-Champions of the league.
Andru Summerall, Bethesda Big Train
Summerall appeared in 27 games for the co-champion Big Train, batting .250 with four home runs and 17 RBI. He had a pinch-hit grand slam against Rockville on June 17, hit two home runs the following day in a 14-0 whitewashing of Loudoun, and had a 3-for-4 night with five RBI (and two walks) against Rockville again on July 1.
COLLEGIATE LEAGUE OF THE PALM BEACHES (Season complete)
Dylan O'Connell, Juno Beach Loggerheads
O'Connell threw four games, including a start, for the Loggerheads. Three of his outings were scoreless, and he notched a save in the team's win on June 15 over Palm Beach, with two perfect innings, including three strikeouts. Overall, he was 0-1 with a 4.05 ERA, striking out 19 in 13 1/3 innings, and only issuing five walks. He was named a CLPB All-Star.
PERFECT GAME COLLEGIATE BASEBALL LEAGUE (Still in progress)
Jared DeSantolo, Newark Pilots
Coming off his sterling freshman year with the Owls, DeSantolo continued to hit for the Pilots, batting .293 with seven doubles and 12 RBI. From July 7 to July 26, he hit safely in 12 straight games, raising his average 50 points to .318. The first five games of the streak, he went 12-for-22 with eight runs scored, and all told, he had 12 multi-hit games. DeSantolo was also a PGCBL All-Star.
Richie Nizza, Amsterdam Mohawks
In 30 regular season games, Nizza batted .241 with two home runs and 11 RBI. His season high in hits came in a 14-7 win over Adirondack on June 19, as he was 3-for-4 with a home runs, two RBI, and three runs scored. The Mohawks had the league's second best overall record (29-17), won the East Division, and soon will compete in the playoffs.
SOUTH FLORIDA COLLEGIATE LEAGUE (Season complete)
Jacob Pino, Palm Beach XTreme
Pino was yet another Owls' All-Star this summer, representing the Xtreme for the South in a game held at FAU Baseball Stadium on July 15. He batted a team-high .336, also led the team in slugging at .439, and was second with 36 hits, 28 runs and a .442 on-base percentage. Five times, he had three hits in a game, including in the first two games of the season, and he had hits in 23 of the 32 games he played in. He also tied for third in the SFCL with 19 stolen bases.
