EUGENE, Ore. â€" Oregon scored twice in the sixth and twice more in the seventh, all the offense they'd need in shutting out Florida Atlantic University baseball on Sunday afternoon at PK Park, 4-0.
Quotable
"To me, it starts in the first inning," said Head Coach John McCormack. "You get a leadoff double coming off a 5-0 victory, they're probably a little unsettled. Then we get the sac bunt down, we gotta score there. We didn't, and it changed the complexion of the game. Both guys pitched great, and their rightfielder (Jakob Goldfarb) was the difference in the game. I've not seen a baseball game with the impact of the defense like that on a consistent basis, that's really been impressive. He single-handedly saved three runs, and their third baseman (Spencer Steer) saved them a fourth, and it's a totally different ballgame otherwise. They play a certain way, pitch to that, and their guys make plays."
The Turning Point
FAU (8-3) starter Vince Coletti cruised through five, only allowing two hits and striking out six, but ran into trouble in the Oregon (7-3) sixth. A single and hit-by-pitch started it, with a sacrifice fly scoring the first run, and a single the second. Weston Clemente came on in relief to stop the rally, but in the next inning, another sac fly and a two-out RBI single doubled the lead.
The Finish
The first two Owls â€" Cody Wilson and Andru Summerall â€" walked in the ninth, but Goldfarb robbed Joe Montes of extra bases with a diving catch in the right-centerfield alley for the first out (he had earlier taken another hit away, from Gunnar Lambert, with a long running catch near the warning track). A groundout advanced the runners to second and third, but a strikeout ended it to give the Ducks the series lead.
