Spence Atkins Named C-USA Newcomer of the Year

BOCA RATON, Fla. â€" Spence Atkins of the Florida Atlantic University's women's swimming team has been tabbed as the Conference USA Newcomer of the Year, as voted by the league's head coaches.
Atkins made her mark with the Owls, winning 75 percent of the races she competed in this season. The sophomore won 18 of 24 events in her debut season with FAU after transferring from Tennessee.
The Sarasota, Florida native won two gold medals at the Conference USA championship in February to help propel the team to a fifth place finish. She finished first in the 200 yard butterfly and the 1650 yard freestyle events.
Atkins ended the season on a high note with a 10-event win streak. She was named Conference USA Swimmer of the Week earlier in the season when she won every event she competed in against Central Connecticut and Fordham.
