Football’s Kerrith Whyte Named C-USA Special Teams Player of the Week

Florida Atlantic University running back and kick returner Kerrith Whyte, Jr. picked up his second honor on Monday when Conference USA named the speedy redshirt junior the league's Special Teams Player of the Week. Earlier in the day, he was also named to the Paul Hornung Award Honor Roll.

It marked the second time in his career that Whyte earned C-USA's Special Team's Player of the Week honors, oddly enough both following a kick return for a score. He is the third FAU football player to receive league honors this season, with quarterback Chris Robison and linebacker Rashad Smith being tapped as the Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week on Sept. 10.

In the history of FAU football, Whyte is the only FAU player to return a kickoff for a score. He first accomplished the feat versus Louisiana Tech in 2017. On Saturday, the Loxahatchee, Florida native duplicated the scoring kick return, but bettered the return yardage by two yards with a program-long 100 yards. Whyte is just the second C-USA player in 2018 to return a kick for a score.

Whyte also provided half of the one-two FAU running game punch with nine carries for 61 yards, an average of 6.8 yards per carry, with two scores. He was credited with 25 receiving yards on two receptions, along with his lone return. All told, he found the end zone three of the eight times the Owls scored, and tallied a game high of 186 all-purpose yards.

The Owls have a bye week this week and will travel to Huntington, West Virginia for a 2:30 p.m. C-USA game versus Marshall. The game will be televised by CBS Sports Network and also will air on ESPN West Palm 106.3 FM. FAU will return home to play host to Louisiana Tech on Friday, Oct. 26.
