ATHENS, Ga. – The Florida Atlantic University men's tennis team faced off against a host of tough competition in the recent ITA Southeast Regional, hosted by the University of Georgia. Highlights from the event included a run to the Division I doubles quarterfinals by the pairing of Alvaro Fernandez Horta and Mehdi Laalej, back-to-back singles victories by Thomas Guy, and victories by Jason Legall in singles, and by Legall and Ignacio Garcia in the doubles main draw.

Notables:

Fernandez Horta and Laalej easily took their first matchup, 8-3, over a pair from Georgia Southern, then moved through the next two rounds, past duos from Stetson and USF
They were tripped up in the round of 8 by a slim margin, 8-6
Guy picked up two straight set victories in qualifying to make it to the main singles draw, winning by respective scores of 6-3, 6-3 and 7-6(5), 6-2
Legall's singles win was also of the straight-set variety, 6-4, 6-2
He then combined with Garcia to defeat a pair from the University of Miami, 8-7 (7)
Guy and Luis Fernandez Labarta made it to the round of 32 in doubles, advancing over a Georgia State pairing in the opening round

"Overall, I was not very happy with how the weekend went," said Head Coach Ricardo Gonzalez. "We were not consistent with our game, and our will to win was not there. We need to continue to strive for excellence and continue to have a vision for our future goals. As a team, we did not win this weekend, but we definitely learned a lot from it and I trust that we will be better because of it. Shout out to Thomas Guy who played some solid tennis over the weekend; I was happy with his performance. We need to get back to work and work on the little details which will make a big difference."
