TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida Atlantic University men's tennis won both of their Saturday matches at the FSU Spring Invitational to advance to the tournament championship. The Owls (2-0) topped Nebraska and North Florida, and will next face No. 20 Florida State on Sunday at 1 p.m. to determine the tourney winner.
Notables:
- In the quarterfinal win over the Cornhuskers, the Owls got the all-important doubles point behind the victories of top-seeded duo Jason Legall/Ignacio Garcia, 7-6 (7-3), and No. 2 Kirac Bekisoglu/Gabriel Sidney, 6-2
- Alvaro Fernandez Horta got the team's first singles point with a straight-set 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 6
- Mehdi Laalej earned one as well in the No. 4 slot, 6-3, 6-1
- The clincher came courtesy of No. 2 Legall, coming back from down a set to win back-to-back decisions, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4
- The semifinals too saw FAU pick up the doubles point, over UNF. Again, it was Legall/Garcia winning, along with the No. 3 pairing of Laalej/Thomas Guy, each by the score of 6-1
- Fernandez Horta won his second singles match of the day at No. 6, 6-0, 6-4
- That was followed by Bekisoglu, victorious in the top singles slot, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1
- This time, No. 4 Laalej took the match-deciding point, 3-6, 7-6, 6-1
