MIAMI, Fla. â€" A five-run sixth inning propelled the No. 17 Florida Atlantic University baseball team to a 9-1 win at FIU in Conference USA action on Sunday.

The Owls (28-10, 12-6 C-USA) tallied 12 hits, surpassing the eight-hit mark for the 31st time in their 38th game. Christian Dicks went 3-for-5 with three RBI while Esteban Puerta was 2-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored. Stephen Kerr and Brett Lashley each scored twice. Sean Labsan earned his fifth victory, dealing five innings of shutout work with five strikeouts. Devon Carr, Austin Kirksey and Marc Nowatnick also pitched shutout appearances.

Kerr led off the game with a single and came in to score on an RBI single by Dicks as FAU scored in the first inning for the fifth consecutive game.

Lashley and Jose Bonilla Traverso each singled before Lashley scored on an RBI by Kerr to double the lead in the second.

Puerta and Dicks each singled to lead off the third inning and advanced on a sac bunt, setting up freshman Tyler Frank for a sacrifice fly to extend the advantage to 3-0.

After FIU left the bases loaded in the fifth, FAU opened the floodgates in the top of the sixth with the help of three errors. With two on, Kerr reached on an error that allowed Frank to score before the Owls loaded the bases. Puerta then drew FAU's 13th bases-loaded, RBI walk. Dicks and Austin Langham hit back-to-back two-out singles to drive in three more runs, capping off the five-run rally.

Three singles in the top of the seventh allowed FIU to plate its only run before Puerta countered with a line-drive, solo homer â€" his sixth of the season.
