Florida Atlantic University's D'Joun Smith was drafted in the third round, the 65th overall pick, by the Indianapolis Colts.
Smith, the sixth FAU player to be drafted since the program's inception in 2001, is the second FAU defensive back to be drafted. Keith Reaser, a fifth round pick in 2014 by the San Francisco 49ers, was the first.
Smith, a 5-10, 187-pound Miami native, earned both first and second team honors by Conference USA for his on-field performance. The corner saw action in 44 games as an Owl and recorded 120 career tackles, including 2.5 for a loss. Smith gained national attention in 2013 after recording seven interceptions and 13 passes defended. He tallied nine career interceptions. Smith also saw time as a spot kick returner where he averaged 23.3 yards per return and set an FAU single-game record with 202 yards versus top-20 Marshall. Smith was named FAU's 2013 Most Valuable Player and earned the team's Defensive Player of the Year honor in 2014.
Smith, FAU's 26th player to sign a professional football contract, became the highest pick in the program's history when he was taken as the first pick of the third round. Tight end Rob Housler was drafted in the third round of the 2010 draft but, was selected 69th overall by the Arizona Cardinals and now plays for the Cleveland Browns. An FAU Owl has signed a professional contract with an NFL team each of the last 12 seasons, since 2004. The Owls have had at least one player on an NFL roster since 2009. FAU quarterback Rusty Smith was the first Owl to be drafted and he was taken in the sixth round by the Tennessee Titans in 2009.
