BOCA RATON, Fla. - Florida Atlantic University's Trey Hendrickson was named Conference USA's Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by C-USA on Monday.
Hendrickson has gotten better every game and showed how dominant he could be against No. 8 ranked Florida. Hendrickson tallied five (3-2) tackles, two were sacks that equaled a loss of 12 yards. He forced a fumble that was recovered in the end zone to even the score at 14 and he earned a blocked extra point attempt in overtime.
Hendrickson's first tackle of the day was a sack that ended UF's first drive on third and 14. He flushed UF's QB to fellow defensive end Hunter Snyder on the first play of Florida's third drive of the second quarter. Hunter's sack was for a loss of 11 yards. In Florida's opening drive of the second half, Hendrickson chased UF's QB, Treon Harris, out of bounds prior to picking up the first down and forced a punt. Hendrickson's second sack, for a loss of seven, was recorded along with a forced fumble that FAU freshman defensive back Ocie Rose picked up in the end zone to tie the game at 14 with eight minutes to play. Hendrickson and Trevon Coley record a tackle that forced third and long and eventually a punt. In Florida's last drive of regulation, the attempt on third and nine was hurried by Hendrickson, forcing UF into their ninth punt of the game.
Hendrickson's heroics didn't end with regulation. UF scored on the opening possession of overtime, but Hendrickson blocked the PAT putting UF up 20-14 which put the Owls in position to pick up an overtime win. Hendrickson earned College Sports Madness C-USA Football Defensive Player of the Week on Sunday. Currently, he sits atop the C-USA leaders in sacks as does the Owls defense and he is No. 10 nationally in sacks.
He is the second FAU player to earn C-USA Defensive Player of the Week honors this season. Rose was honored for his efforts in the Charlotte contest.
The junior defensive end will lead the Owls this weekend when the Owls travel to Old Dominion for a Saturday, Nov. 28 contest that kicks at noon. The game will be carried on the American Sports Network and can be head on ESPN West Palm 106.3 or fausports.com.
