LARAMIE, Wyo - The Florida Atlantic University football team had victory in its grasp on Saturday, but saw it slip away in the waning moments to fall to Wyoming 20-19.
"It came down to explosive plays and turnovers," said FAU Head Coach Charlie Partridge. "There were some things we can be proud of. We have to find a way to finish a game. You can't turn over the ball when you are headed in and you have a chance to finish it and you can't give up an explosive play, although our defense had a valiant effort today. Didn't finish it on the last drive. The offense at times moved the ball really well at times today. We just have to learn to punch it in."
With just over two minutes left in the game, the Cowboys (3-1) were backed up to their own 11-yard line on fourth down and 22 yards to go after a Trey Hendrickson sack for a loss of 12. The Owls (1-3) held Wyoming and took over on downs with a two-point lead. On the first play of the drive WU forced a fumble and recovered the ball for one more shot opportunity on the Cowboy eight.
The first Wyoming play of the drive went for 88 yards to the FAU 4-yard line which setup a game-winning, 18-yard field goal by Stuart Williams with 15 seconds left. To start the game, the Cowboys struck first with an 80-yard drive that ended with a one-yard punch in by Shaun Wick with 7:22 remaining in the first quarter. FAU's Greg Joseph connected on a 32-yard field goal to end an 11-play drive by the Owls, who pulled within four at 7-3 with 2:55 remaining in the first quarter.
UW opened the second quarter with a 50-yard field goal to capitalize on the FAU turnover and take a 10-3 lead. FAU senior linebacker Andrae Kirk grabbed a sack and forced a fumble that fellow senior linebacker David Lozandier recovered at the Cowboy 34. Four plays later, Greg Joseph hit his second field goal of the game, a 30-yarder to pull within four at 10-6 with :22 remaining in the half.
The Owls forced UW to punt and they did so over the head of a waiting Lucky Whitehead. Whitehead picks it up on the bounce, turns around and bobs and weaves through the traffic 65 yards to the Cowboy 14. On the next play, Jaquez Johnson, who was 14-28 on the day with 99 yards in the air and 44 yards on the ground with 11 carries, kept for the 14-yard score. Greg Joseph's PAT was good and the Owls held their first lead of the game at 13-10 with 8:56 remaining in the third.
Joseph hit a career long 43-yard field goal to put the Owls up 16-10 with 58 seconds remaining in the third. The Cowboys responded with a four play drive that ended with a five-yard touchdown by Cowboy running back D.J. May. UW took their second lead of the game at 17-16 with 14:56 remaining in the game.
FAU's Jay Warren scampered 30 yards to push him over the 100 yard plateau for the first time in 2014, and the second time in his young career, to set up a 33-yard field goal by Joseph. The Owls took their second lead of the game at 19-17 with 8:14 remaining.
Joseph was 4-for-4 on field goal attempts, making one in each of the four quarters. Whitehead ended the day with 200 all-purpose yards, including 91 yards in punt returns, which ranks as the third most in a game in FAU history. His 30.3 yards per return was just shy of the FAU record of 30.5 set by Matt Prudenti in 2003.
FAU returns home to open Conference USA play with a Saturday, Sept. 27 matchup against UTSA. For single game tickets, which marks Parents and Family Weekend, call 1-866-FAU-OWLS. All FAU games will be carried on ESPN West Palm 106.3, which has an APP for the Smart Phone platform, and on www.fausports.com.
Notes:
Jay Warren drew the start at running back and tallied his first 100 yard plus game of the 2014 season and the second of his young career. Greg Joseph was 4-4 in field goals with a career long 43.
