JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University men's basketball team used a 40-point second half to defeat Jacksonville 68-50 on Tuesday night. Solomon Poole scored 19 points in his return to his hometown.
Poole hit a three-pointer and converted a Marquan Botley alley oop for the first five points of the game. Kelvin Penn scored on a putback to give the Owls (7-4) a 7-0 lead. JU (5-11) scored eight straight points to take the lead. That pattern remained for the rest of the half, FAU building a lead, followed by the Dolphins fighting back.
The Owls led by four at the 12-minute mark of the second half before going on a 15-1 run to take a 54-38 lead. The margin remained at least 14 for the rest of the game.
Botley missed several minutes of action with a busted lip, then returned to score all 14 of his points in the second half. He also tied his career high with eight assists. Penn had his second straight double-digit rebound effort, pulling down 11.
The Owls will open Conference USA play on Sunday, when they host rival FIU. Sunday's game will start at 2 p.m. Subscription-based live video of the FIU game will be available through FAUSports.com. All FAU games will be carried on ESPN West Palm 106.3, which has an APP for the Smart Phone platform.
