Boca Raton, FL - Former Florida Atlantic University baseball player Jeff Beliveau has been named to Team USA for the upcoming World Cup and Pan American Games. The left-handed pitcher is one of the top prospects in the Chicago Cubs organization.
The IBAF World Cup will take place from Sunday, October 2 through Saturday, October 15 in Panama City, Panama, while the Pan American Games are set for Guadalajara, Mexico, later that month.
"Jeff had a wonderful season and it is a tremendous honor to represent our country," said John McCormack, FAU's head baseball coach. "International baseball is very special and we are excited for him."
Beliveau, who played for the Owls in 2008, recently finished the 2011 minor-league season at the Cubs' Class AA affiliate, the Tennessee Smokies, where he had a 6-1 record with a dazzling 1.89 earned run average in 41 games as a relief pitcher. He started the season with the Class A-Advanced Daytona Cubs, but was promoted after recording two saves and a 0.52 ERA in 12 appearances.
After representing his country, Beliveau will spend this fall playing for the Mesa Solar Sox of the Arizona Fall League with former FAU pitcher Brandon Kloess, who has spent time this season playing for three different affiliates within the Chicago White Sox's organization.
"Jeff and Brandon are getting a great opportunity to play in the premiere winter baseball league in the United States," said McCormack. "It is a good arena to show the major league clubs what they can do by playing against some of the best players in the game. We wish them all the best."
As an Owl, Beliveau posted a 5-4 record and tossed one complete game in his 14 starting assignments during the 2008 season. He recorded more than a strikeout per inning with 78 punch outs in 76.2 innings.
