Boca Raton, Fla. - Former Florida Atlantic University relief pitcher Andy Mee has made a strong first impression as a professional baseball player, pitching two scoreless relief appearances and earning a victory for the Normal CornBelters of the independent Frontier League. He became the fourth player from the 2011 Owls' team to sign a professional contract.
The Palm Beach Gardens native made his professional debut last Saturday against the Evansville Otters, striking out four batters in two flawless innings. The right hander followed by tossing 1.1 innings on Monday night to earn the victory in the CornBelters' 7-4 victory, which snapped a seven-game losing streak.
"We are very excited that Andy has signed a professional baseball contract and realized his dreams," said John McCormack, FAU's head baseball coach. "I am looking forward to following his career. It couldn't have happened to a nicer young man."
Mee was a dual-threat option for McCormack in his two seasons with the Owls, making 36 relief appearances and posting a .335 career batting average. In 2010, he led the Sun Belt Conference with 11 saves as FAU captured the league title. Mee garnered all-region and All-American honors following his junior campaign. He struck out 40 batters in 48.1 career innings on the mound.
Mee joined 2011 FAU players Paul Davis, Raymond Church and Nick DelGuidice in continuing their playing careers in professional baseball. Davis and Church were selected in last month's Major League Draft and DelGuidice signed a free agent contract following the draft.
