BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University's football team held its first practice in full pads on Saturday and with the pads came intensity and energy.
The Owls began the day with individual work and as is tradition, the first day of pads brings means the Oklahoma drill.
"Oklahoma signals the beginning of practice whether it is in the spring or summer," said Jarvis Givens a rising FAU senior defensive lineman.
The day saw good plays made on both sides of the ball. David Kooi hit Damian Fortner, Travis Jones, Xavier Stinson and Byron Hankerson in the individual work and later found Hankerson in 7-on-7. Graham Wilbert hit Darian Williams in 7-on-7 while Nick Bracewell found Nexon Dorvilus. Linebacker Martin Wright was tall on defense batting down a pass and Christian Milstead came up with an interception that drew cheers from the defense.
All and all, the Owls got in nearly three hours of work and Head Coach Howard Schnellenberger was pleased with the day.
"We may be young in areas but the players are making the plays just like players in the past," said Schnellenberger. "The gap is closing in the ability between first and second team and we aren't seeing the drop in production from one player to the next."
The Owls will open the 2011 campaign at the University of Florida, September 3, 2011. The Owls will run into their new on-campus stadium October 15, 2011.
