BOCA RATON, FL- The Florida Atlantic University's football team took the field on Saturday for the second scrimmage of the spring season. It was the offense who came out on top this scrimmage winning 24 to 18. The defense began to come back in the second half of play, but the offense was able to take control of the final minutes and secure the win with a last play touch down run by Travis Jones. Jones' touchdown was the only touchdown of the second half for the offense.
The two teams were on the field for 116 plays in the modified scoring game that awards the defense one point for each drive stop, three points for forcing a turnover and six for scoring. The offense scores in the traditional fashion but has three plays to move the ball 10 yards, rather than four, until they are inside the defense's 40. At that point, the offense has four downs to move the chains.
Quarterback Graham Wilbert opened up the 56 play first half handing the ball off to running back Damian Fortner for a six yard gain. The defense then took control stopping the offense's first drive after only five plays. Wilbert was able to get in to a grove in the second drive ending a string of 12 plays with a touchdown run by Fortner. Wilbert also threw a touchdown pass to tight end Alex Deleon in the first half.
Red-shirt junior David Kooi got in behind center connecting with running back Travis Jones to help put together the longest drive of the day that was 13 plays long in the first half. The drive ended with Chris Jackson catching a 12 yard pass from Kooi. Quarterbacks Stephen Curtis and Nick Bracewell also took reps involving running backs Xavier Stinson and Frank Thompson and wide receiver Jabyes Cross.
The defense put up a good fight gaining points throughout the whole scrimmage off of stopping offensive drives and by having multiple sacks. In the first half there were two sacks by Brandon Hando and Michael Copeland, but it was in the second half where the defensive pressure picked up and there were seven more sacks laid on the quarterbacks. Line backer Randell Johnson, Hando and Copeland all had multiple and Markenel Zele also assisted on one.
