Boca Raton, Fla. - A grand slam home run by Seton Hall's Guiseppe Pappacio in the 10th inning lifted the Pirates to a 8-4 victory over the Florida Atlantic University baseball team on Friday evening at the FAU Baseball Stadium. The victory was the second straight in the modified weekend series and moved the Owls' record to 10-6 on the season.
Pappacio, who entered the game as a pinch-runner, also scored the run that tied the game 4-4 in the top of the ninth inning on a hit by pinch hitter Scott Kalamar. The extra inning heroics began with a base hit by Zach Granite to right field. Mike Genovese then laid down a bunt and both runners reached base safely. Another sacrifice bunt by Will Walsh moved Granite to third and Genovese into scoring position. The bases were loaded following an intentional walk to Frank Esposito. Then, came Pappacio's big hit.
FAU had taken a 4-to-3 advantage by scoring two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Defensive miscues allowed the Owls to score both runs as the visitors committed three errors. Junior catcher Mike Albaladejo scored the lead run after a ground ball by senior designated hitter Eddie Cassidy was misplayed.
Seton Hall's late-inning surge spoiled another strong starting pitching performance by Paul Davis. The FAU junior allowed three runs and had three strike outs in seven innings. Junior right hander Hugh Adams tossed a perfect eighth inning before handing things over to closer pitcher Andy Mee, who suffered his first loss of the season.
Meanwhile, the Owls' offense was led by junior outfielder Alex Hudak and senior shortstop Nick DelGuidice, with two hits a piece. DelGuidice's RBI double in the second inning brought home Hudak while senior first baseman Dan Scheffler lined a base hit to plate Albaladejo in the third inning to gave FAU an early 2-1 advantage.
Senior second baseman Raymond Church was held hitless for the first time in 25 games. He tied the school record by hitting safely in 24 straight games.
Seton Hall reliever Ryan Harvey improved to 2-0 on the season with 3.1 innings of scoreless work.
FAU will wrap up the series with the Pirates on Saturday, March 12, with a game starting at noon. Seton Hall improves to 5-7 on the spring campaign and has won three straight games.
