Boca Raton, Fla. - While most college teams were squaring off against an opponent, the Florida Atlantic University's football team used its open week on the schedule to get in some valuable practice time - with Owls on both sides of the line of scrimmage. The team spent more time on being prepared for next Saturday's home and Sun Belt Conference opener against the University of North Texas.
The offensive unit was able to move the chains effectively during FAU's seven-on-seven drill on the Tom Oxley Athletic Fields. Redshirt sophomore quarterback Graham Wilbert found redshirt freshman running back Travis Jones streaking past the defense for a 15-yard gain. Redshirt senior quarterback Jeff Van Camp also shined as he connected with redshirt senior tight end Rob Housler on a left seam passing route for another big gain. Van Camp also hooked up with redshirt senior running back Willie Floyd for another big gain down the left sideline.
The defense would respond in the 11-on-11 portion of practice as redshirt senior cornerback Tavious Polo jumped the wide receiver's route to intercept a pass from freshman quarterback Stephen Curtis. Later, Van Camp would find Housler over the middle during a third down-and-long situational drill. A few plays later, redshirt freshman defensive back Keith Reaser would return an interception for a touchdown.
Later, the defense continued its strong play as sophomore linebacker David Hines forced a fumble after a crushing collision with Jones following a handoff from Wilbert. Special teams also got some valuable work with the Owls spending time on punt and kickoff coverage units.
FAU will return to the Oxley Athletic Fields on Sunday, September 19 for a practice starting at 1 p.m. All practices are free and open to the public.
The Owls will have their home opener against North Texas on Saturday, September 25 at Lockhart Stadium in Fort Lauderdale.
