BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University's football team saw the defense take scrimmage no. 1, 34-24. Despite the score there were big plays on offense, big stops on defense and a fire to win on both sides of the ball.
The scrimmage opened with a 60-yard score from starting senior quarterback Jeff Van Camp to the team's leading returning receiver Lester Jean. Oh no's could be heard all around the defense, but it didn't take long for the defense to score their first point on a big tackle by returning senior Malik Eugene who prevented Jean from picking up a first down on the next series. Two-year starter Dino Cox followed with a sack. While Alex Patte recovered an Alfred Morris fumble on the next play to draw within two at 6-4, offense.
The offense scored just one more time in the first half when Van Camp connected with Jean, but the defense had taken advantage of a new center and a young line to build a 21-12 cushion.
"The defense was obviously dominant except for the few drives," said Howard Schnellenberger, FAU's head coach. "We made a lot of errors on offense with snap exchanges, but that will happen with 3rd and 4th string centers. I'm disappointed but not terribly concerned. We will get better as a team as time goes on." Both David Kooi and Graham Wilbert saw action as did eight backs and nine receivers. Van camp led the day going 13-18-1 for 203 yards and three scores. Kooi was 2-7 for eight yards and picked up 12 on the ground. Wilbert was 6-16 for 92 yards and was able to move the chains.
Defensively, senior preseason all Sun Belt selection Tavious Polo broke up at least two passes and created a lot of pressure on the young receivers. Treon Howard had a pass break-up and an interception for a score.
FAU's preseason practice work will continue 3:30 p.m. Saturday which is scheduled to be devoted to special teams. The remainder of the day will be spent on game corrections Practices are free and open to the public.
The Owls will kick-off the 2010 season Thursday, September 2 at UAB. Season tickets as well as single-game tickets are on sale and can be purchased on line or by calling 1-866-FAU-OWLS.
