BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University's football team has closed the book on the second practice of "spring drills" and the final scheduled practice with no pads. The Owls will be back on the practice field 11 a.m. Saturday morning.
"Today was the last day with no pads," said Howard Schnellenberger FAU's head coach. "They worked hard. Now the test comes. Overall there was improvement made."
Friday's practice schedule was similar to the season's drills with more emphasis on technique and fundamentals rather than scheming. Practice opened with individual work, moved to installing the pass where the tight ends, backs and receivers worked on the west field. The defense, and the offensive line, used the east field to work defensive pass drills. Seven-on-seven followed where Darian Williams had a long catch from David Kooi as a highlight of the day. The squad then broke up to work on installing the run followed by team drills where soon to be redshirt freshman linebacker Randall Johnson had an interception.
The Owls' practice schedule will be Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 3:30 p.m. with Saturday's reserved as a scrimmage day starting April 10 continuing April 17 and the spring game is scheduled for the 24th.
The 2010 Spring Game Saturday, April 24 on the Tom Oxley Athletic fields, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus will also feature the annual yard sale of athletic apparel. Following the scrimmage, Owl fans, players and coaches will head to the Marleen and Harold Forkas Alumni Center for the first "Pride and Spirit" event hosted by FAU's Student Alumni Association. A pre-game tailgate will be hosted by student government.
All practices are free and open to the public.
