Miami, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University women's tennis team started its 2010-11 season by playing competitive singles and doubles matches in the first day of the Florida Invitational University Fall Invitational on Friday in Miami. Tournament play will continue through Sunday.
The Owls' six singles matches featured sophomore newcomer Madeline Johnson, who dropped a three-set decision against Barry University's Julie Stas. Johnson captured the second set by a 6-2 score to force a deciding third set. She continued the strong play in that set before losing in a tiebreaker 7-2. The match was the first of Johnson's career at FAU.
Sophomore Natasha Basma lost two challenging sets to FIU's Maria Spenceley by 7-5, 6-4 scores. Basma was one of three Owls to post 10 or more singles victories last season.
In doubles action, the tandem of senior Virginia Augustin and junior Erika Mrazkova fell 7-5 in a tiebreaker against a duo from the Air Force Academy. Freshman Marlene Ryan and sophomore Natasha Phillips lost 8-6 to another team from the Falcons.
The Owls will continue action in singles and doubles divisions on Saturday.
