JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic women's tennis team kicked off its fall campaign at the ITA Bedford Cup, a tournament hosted by North Florida, from Friday, Oct. 3 to Sunday, Oct. 5.
Despite the event shortened due to weather, the Owls saw success with Alexia Patru winning the semifinals and the doubles duo of Malika Amirgalieva and Katrin Pavkova earning a semifinals berth in Flight A.
The freshman Patru earned a trophy in the Flight B field, defeating her Florida opponent. After dropping the first set 4-6, she tallied a 6-4 win and was up 3-2 when the match was called to win the title. This was preceded by a 6-1, 1-6, 10-2 match against FIU in the Round of 16 and a 3-6, 6-2, 10-8 win over UNF in the quarterfinals.
In doubles play, Amirgalieva and Pavkova tallied a 6-4 victory over Miami in the Round of 16 and defeated FIU by a score of 6-3 in the quarters.
The Owls will next head to Orlando to compete in the ITA Regionals, taking place from Thursday, Oct. 16 to Sunday, Oct. 20.
