BOCA RATON, FL - Raymond Taylor had a program high 13 assists on Saturday night, but the Florida Atlantic men's basketball team fell to South Alabama 96-93 in overtime.
The Owls (5-9, 1-2) got out fast in the second half, leading by 11 on three different occasions and lead by 10, 41-31 at intermission. FAU got off to a fast start in the second half as well as a thunderous Brett Royster dunk gave the Owls a 50-35 advantage.
A Shavar Richardson three-pointer made the score 71-58 for FAU with nine minutes left in regulation, but the Owls went nearly five minutes without a field goal, during which time the Jaguars had pulled to within five.
After a missed free throw by FAU, Tim Williams hit a three pointer to tie the game at 86. Both teams had chances to win the game in regulation, but neither could convert. In overtime, South Alabama had a 7-2 run to take a 96-91 lead, after a Jordan McCoy layup and a five second violation on USA, Greg Gantt had an opportunity to force a second extra session, but he three-point attempt fell just short.
Royster led the Owls with 20 points, Sanchez Hughley added 13 points and eight rebounds. The Owls will continue their four-game homestand on Thursday, January 7 when they host Troy. The game will start at 7 p.m.
