BOCA RATON, FL - The final of four preseason three-a-day practices came and went for Florida Atlantic University's football team on Friday. The celebration of preseason will begin Saturday with Fanfest, the annual preseason scrimmage that features autograph signings by all FAU fall sports as well as performances by the band, cheer and dance squads.
More importantly to the FAU offense, the scrimmage will be an opportunity to even the score following last week's 35-24 victory.
"Saturday's scrimmage will be the most important (scrimmage) that we have had in the longest of time," said Howard Schnellenberger, FAU's head coach. "The defense is young and trying hard. They have made improvements and will need to prove that it is solidified. The offense is talented and experienced."
Leading up to the second scrimmage the Owls hit the practice field Friday at 8 a.m. The first practice began with punt and punt coverage. Senior Alex Pecorella and newcomers Damian Fortner and Nexon Dorvilus were each credited with a punt block. The team then moved into individual drills to close out the early practice.
The Owls returned to the field at 10:30 a.m. shaking off the full pads for shorts and shoulder pads while they worked on team drills, 7-on-7, goal line stands and field goals.
The third practice began, once again, with punt coverage. The lines then squared off in blitz drills. Work was also done on first and 10 and long yardage situations. Avery Holley hauled in a pass and ran it in for a score and Alfred Morris and Xavier Stinson both look good in the back field. Practice ended with overtime drills with William Rose providing the score.
FAU Athletics will host the 2009 Fanfest beginning at 2 p.m. Saturday on the FAU Boca Raton campus Tom Oxley Practice Fields. Parking and the event are free and open to the public.
