BOCA RATON, FL - Whenever the opposing quarterback throws against the Florida Atlantic Owls this season, the weight of the world will be on the shoulders of the secondary.
Although young, the secondary produces some of the best athletes on the team. Coach Howard Schnellenberger is not worried about the skill of his players, but needs them to stay healthy and aware the entire season.
At cornerback, he has one of the most experienced groups of players he has ever had on the team, let alone the secondary.
"We got three of the most experienced corners we have ever had," he said. "If they rise up and have a great senior year, we will be alright."
Last year, the Owl defense allowed 2,882 passing yards throughout the season. While this number is not bad, it would not hurt to decrease it slightly. They also forced 13 interceptions.
In a very young corps of safeties, Schnellenberger sees bright spots and potential leaders waiting to break through. One of those safeties is redshirt junior Rod Huggins. Last year, Huggins recorded nine tackles. Huggins will be joined by Ed Alexander and Austin Jensen.
"Huggins is big and strong and can play either strong or weak," Schnellenberger said. "He has been here an extra year and it's time for him to make something happen."
If the secondary can play its game, it will take a lot of pressure off of the line and linebackers. Knowing a solid group of players has your back, literally, makes life a lot easier.
