Head Coach John McCormack
Overall thoughts on the series
To play well on the road in this type of environment, especially with all the things that went on, tarp-on, tarp-off, the guys did an unbelievable job of staying focused. I could not be happier at the moment but there are things we will work on, committing too many errors. I don't want to dwell on the negative but we will work on a few things.
On the importance of the series at ULL
Traditionally this has been the toughest place to play in the Sun Belt Conference. With all the rain, it may have helped keep the fans away - somewhat helping us in that respect, but then again we had some really good pitching performances and swung the bats really well. Any time you can go on the road and sweep a series - and I know it was only two games - but it is important. It is key to play well on the road if you want to have good year and these guys are getting it done, I am proud of them.
On momentum gained heading into the five scheduled games next week
I think we need to keep building and building. We are getting there. Our offense had around 15 hits again today. The offense is carrying us and the pitching is coming around. We are always forced to adjust. I think Glen (Troyanowski) looked good out of the bullpen and Ahmed (Garcia) did what was asked of him too and that was good to see. To withstand their rally and come up with the win in Game One and to get another one in Game Two gives us momentum, there is no doubt about that. We will try and keep it rolling next week.
Pitching Coach Jason Jackson
Asked about the positives on the weekend pitching versus Louisiana-Lafayette
Starting pitching. Mike (Gipson) did a great job of setting the tone for us. Last night the conditions were tough, rainy and nasty conditions. He battled through a rain delay, pitched really, really well. Not only does that save the bullpen but also sets the tone for the weekend. The starting pitching has been a little bit inconsistent for us and the bullpen has been very good. This weekend it was just what we needed from the starting pitching, going deep into the game, save the pen and give our offense a chance to score some runs.
The highs and lows of the extended Game One
Oh man, that game could have gone either way. If we don't win that game it could have easily put us in a tailspin going into the next one. It worked the other way, Glen (Troyanowski) came in, in a tough situation, fell behind in the count but stepped up and made the pitches when he had to. That gave us momentum going into the next game as opposed to us having to regroup.
What does the staff need to do midweek against Rutgers and then heading into the next series at Middle Tennessee State?
I think some of the guys that have not gotten a chance to throw a lot, we need to get them on the mound. We did not get the chance to use the guys we wanted to use this weekend due to the shortened series and cause our starters went deep. Our depth has to improve. Some of the guys that have not gotten to throw need to get some work in.
What grade do you give the pitching versus ULL
I would say a B+. We had a few too many walks to be an A, but the guys did a nice job and overall I would say B+.
Hitting Coach Ben Sanderson
When asked about where FAU is at offensively
I think the guys are having good at-bats. They understand what it means to get a good pitch to hit and when they get it they are squaring up. We are doing a great job with two-strikes. We got a number of two-strike hits today. Early in (Game Two) we did a good job executing some situations putting us on top and giving our pitchers a comfort zone. Can not say enough about some of the two-out stuff we did, some guys getting on base and that leading to good innings. Guys are running the bases well, you start putting some of these things together and you can become a pretty good offensive club.
What individual performances stuck out to you this weekend?
Anthony Mesa was a guy who had been struggling but came out and did a great job in the nine hole. Drove in the big run late in Game One and got us going in Game Two early then added a home run. (William) Block had a good weekend. I think he would tell you he is not playing as well as his standards would like, but this weekend he drove in some big runs. Huge hit from Tom Hatcher in the first game. He hit the big double that led to us winning that game. He had an outstanding weekend. He is a guy who stayed the course, did not start out too well, had the hand injury and had some things not go his way but give him credit, tells you a lot about what kind of player he his. He will just take off from here.
