BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic University softball team will begin its 2009 season this weekend as hosts of the FAU Kick-Off Classic. Tournament action begins on Friday, February 6 at 9 a.m. and the Owls start their season at 6 p.m. when they face the University of Massachusetts at FAU Stadium, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus.
The FAU Kick-Off Classic features three 2008 NCAA tournament teams (UMass, University of Michigan and Long Island University). The University of Maryland and the University of Pittsburgh make up the rest of the field. The tournament will be a true round robin format with each team playing the rest of the field one time over the course of three days. Michigan (#5) and UMass (#24) are both ranked in the ESPN.com/USA Softball preseason Top 25.
The field also features four players named to the ASA Collegiate Player of the Year Watch List. UMass pitcher Brandice Balschmitter and Michigan players Angela Findlay, Nikki Nemitz and Jordan Taylor were among the 50 players recognized. Michigan and UMass will be participating in the Kick-Off Classic for the second straight season. Both the Wolverines and Minutewomen defeated the Owls in last season's tournament.
All tournament games will be available via GameTracker and there will be live play-by-play available for all of FAU's games by clicking on the tournament button, located on the softball page at fausports.com.
