Arkansas State Gets to FAU `Pen, Top Owls 8-2

BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University's bullpen walked in two runs during a five-run Indians' eighth inning that allowed visiting Arkansas State University an 8-2 win over FAU Friday.On just two hits Arkansas State (19-30; 8-17 SBC) plated five runs in the eighth, spoiling another quality start turned in by FAU lefty Jeff Beliveau.
Florida Atlantic (26-23; 12-11 SBC) has lost six-of-seven.
ASU starter Chase Ware (5-5) entered the game as one of the better starters in the Sun Belt Conference and fanned seven FAU batters in eight strong innings. Ware began the night limiting opposing hitters to a .259 average, striking out 50 in 68-plus innings spanning 11 previous starts.
The game was knotted at 1-1 after seven innings, with Ware and Beliveau locked into a pitcher's duel before the Indians took the lead off FAU reliever Alex Pepe (0-2) in the top of the eighth.
After Pepe issued a one-out walk in the eighth, Brandon Eller hit a run-scoring double into right-centerfield that scored teammate Derrick Coleman from first base, giving ASU its first lead 2-1.
Courtesy of two consecutive Pepe walks, one intentional, ASU loaded up the bases with one out and Pepe proceeded to walk another, pushing in a run to make it 3-1.
With the bases still loaded, freshman Kyle Forney threw four consecutive balls in relief of Pepe- handing ASU its second free run of the inning. A fielder's choice RBI and a subsequent base hit broke open a game that was tied to begin the inning.
When the dust cleared in the ASU half of the eighth, the Indians led 6-1.
FAU lefty Jeff Beliveau turned in his fourth consecutive quality start, taking a no-hitter into the fifth.
Beliveau struck out six and walked seven in seven complete frames. Beliveau would receive a no-decision, lifted after 118 pitches in favor of Pepe.
Daniel Cook doubled twice for FAU and Alex Silversmith led off the bottom of the ninth with his fourth homer.
GAME NOTES: FAU head coach Kevin Cooney served as the third base coach for the first time this season... Associate head coach John McCormack had been the third base coach for all previous 48 games... Additionally senior OF Justin Ferreira began the game as the first base coach, a position assistant coach Norberto Lopez had filled in all previous games...Jeff Beliveau made his first Friday start of the season... Sophomore first baseman/DH Riaan Spanjer-Furstenburg made his collegiate pitching debut, coming on to work in begin the ninth.
