BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic University softball team will begin their season by hosting the FAU Kick-Off Classic this weekend.
The Owls (42-23) will attempt to successfully defend their Sun Belt regular season and tournament titles. Before FAU begins conference play, it will host a season opening tournament that has one of the toughest fields in the nation. The FAU Kick-Off Classic boasts a field of North Florida, South Carolina, UMass, Maryland and Michigan. Michigan is ranked No. 12 in the NFCA preseason poll and UMass and South Carolina both recived votes in the poll. All five teams return to Boca Raton after participating in tournaments last season. FAU starts their season by hosting North Florida (33-24) at 6 p.m. on Friday, February 8. After facing the Ospreys, FAU will face South Carolina (38-26) in the nightcap on Friday. The Gamecocks defeated the Owls in the championship game of the Miken Invitational last season.
FAU will take on the Maryland Terrapins (33-26) in their first game on Saturday at 6 p.m. The Terrapins and Owls did not meet in last year's FAU Classic, where Maryland finished second. FAU finishes its scheduled games against Michigan on Saturday at 8 p.m. The no. 12 Wolverines (47-13) won the FAU Classic last season, defeated the Owls 6-2 on their way to the championship. Michigan made it to the Super Regionals before falling to Baylor in three games.
