TAMPA, Fla. – A four-hour, scoreless game for 14 innings ended with the Florida Atlantic softball team falling 1-0 to South Florida on an errant throw following a sacrifice fly.
The Sunday series finale between the Owls (26-16, 8-10) and the Bulls (32-13, 14-4) lasted four hours and 10 minutes and saw a combined 429 pitches between the two starters, both of who tossed complete games.
Courtney's 211 pitches in 13.2 innings of work were both career highs. Allowing no earned runs with essentially two complete games, her season ERA drops to 2.15.
THE BEGINNING
Redshirt junior outfielder
Kylie Hammonds led the game off with a single, but hits were hard to come by for both teams the rest of the way. Neither team made it past second base through the first six innings.
With two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, a flyball to centerfield was snagged by Hammonds to send the scoreless game into extra innings.
THE TURNING POINT
Hammonds continued to make plays in the outfield in the eighth and ninth. Two walks put the Owls in scoring position in the top of the 10th before a strikeout retired the side.
A hit by Hammonds to start the 13th led to her eventually reaching third base and making an attempt for home, but she was tagged out at the plate. Courtney continued to deliver necessary outs to send the game into the 14th inning, one off from tying the single-game program record
THE FINISH
Sophomore
Lily Holtje began the 14th with a leadoff double, the first extra base hit by either team, but the Owls could not capitalize with a run.
In the bottom frame, a single and steal by the Bulls put them into scoring position. An attempted throw to third base after a flyout to center field bounced off the baserunner and out of play, allowing the winning run to score.
NOTES/NOTABLE
- Courtney is the first Owl pitcher to throw over 13 innings in one game since Tatum Buckley on March 14, 2018.
