BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic softball team got back into the win column with a 7-1 victory over FIU on Wednesday evening.
Offense was back on track for the Owls (27-16) with eight hits, highlighted by strong performances at the plate from senior third baseman Jesiana Mora and sophomore outfielder Bella Foran.
Freshman pitcher Makenna Lee made the winning start in the circle, holding the Panthers (28-14) scoreless until the sixth inning, ultimately conceding one run in 5.2 innings of work. She improves to 6-1 on the season.
THE BEGINNING
The two teams traded scoreless frames until the bottom of the third inning. Foran's leadoff triple and a fielder's choice set up Mora's two-RBI single for a 2-0 lead.
Foran later drove in another run off a hit in the bottom of the fourth to go up 3-0.
THE TURNING POINT
A no-doubt homer by Mora, her sixth of the season, led off the bottom of the fifth.
The Owls were not done, scoring twice more in the same frame. Entering as a pinch hitter, senior Madison Inscoe delivered two RBI on a single.
THE FINISH
FIU countered in the top of the sixth with its only run of the game, a solo shot to center field. After retiring two more batters, Lee made way for Inscoe in the circle, with a popup in foul territory retiring the side.
An RBI single from freshman Lily Lowery in the bottom half of the sixth canceled out the Panthers run, growing the lead to its 7-1 final.
