The Florida Atlantic University football team held its second situational scrimmage on Saturday. However, they would have to wait two hours and switch fields to get the scrimmage in.
Heavy rain in the Boca Raton area forced FAU to hold their scrimmage on the artificial surface at the FAU Track and Field complex. Both units were able to get a lot of work done under the cooler skies. On offense, quarterback Rusty Smith led the first unit on a long march out of the shadow of their own goal line, as he hit Cortez Gent for a couple of first downs. Then, running back Willie Floyd picked up big yardage on a run that led to a two-yard score by Floyd around the right end.
The offense was also in command during the two-minute drill. Smith on 4th down hit Gent on a long fade route to keep the drive going. Then later, Smith hit Gent on another fade for the score.
Defense also had a decent day. Cornerback Gedel Merzius picked off a tipped pass, and assisted by some good down the field blocking, Merzius took it to the end zone for a touchdown against the scout team.
The Owls will hold practice on Sunday, beginning at 3:30 p.m. Sunday's practice is open to the public. Season and individual game tickets are on sale now as FAU kicks off its 2007 season against Sun-Belt co-champion Middle Tennessee State on Saturday, September 1st at 4 p.m. at Lockhart Stadium. For ticket information, call the FAU ticket office at 1-866-FAU-OWLS.
