On Thursday, the Florida Atlantic University football team saw their first day off from practice since the beginning of camp. Friday, the Owls went back to work in front of a good crowd of fans on the FAU practice field.
With the opening game against Middle Tennessee State just over a week away, the focus of today's practice shifted to installing the game plan against the Blue Raiders. It was the first day the first two units of both the offense and defense faced off against the scout teams. Rusty Smith benefited from the day off of practice. He played his normal reps today, highlighted by a post route pass to Cortez Gent. The defense got their first on practice look at what they'll see from Middle Tennessee. They were highlighted by a defensive line stop by freshman Michael Hancock on an end around play. Corner Rod Huggins also got into the act, coming up with an interception on an overthrow.
For Smith, seeing the scout team means that kickoff is not too far away.
"Seeing the scout team out there, it puts it in the forefront of your mind that it's out there," said Smith.
The Owls will practice again on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. Practice is open to the public. Season and individual game tickets are on sale now as FAU kicks off its 2007 season against Sun-Belt co-champion Middle Tennessee State on Saturday, September 1st at 4 p.m. at Lockhart Stadium.
