With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth inning, Devon Bourque drew a bases loaded walk to earn a 3-2 win for the University of Louisiana-Lafayette over Florida Atlantic University on Sunday afternoon. Chris Salberg threw seven strong innings for FAU and held UL to two runs on seven hits and struck out five.
The Ragin' Cajuns (20-5, 7-2 SBC) struck in the first inning as Josh Logan led off with a single. After Salberg recorded the next two outs, Jonathon Lucroy drove a double down the right field line for the first run of the contest.
FAU (18-9, 2-7 SBC) answered back and took the lead in the fourth inning after scoring a run in both the third and fourth innings. Justin Martin was hit by a pitch in the third and advanced to third on one of Nick Arata's two singles of the day. With a ground ball to the middle of the infield by William Block Martin scored Florida Atlantic's first run.
Robbie Widlansky started the fourth inning with a double and scored on a groundout by Daniel Cook for FAU's only other score of the contest. The Owls were held to two runs in each game of the series.
In the sixth inning, UL threatened but Chris Salberg answered the challenge. With runners on the corners and no one out, the senior recorded a struck out, induced a pop up and a fly out to end the threat.
Daniel Cook started the seventh inning with a double before Riaan Spanjer-Furstenburg was issued a walk to put two runners on with one out. With a hit and run on, Justin Martin hit the first pitch he saw back up the middle. The shortstop moving towards the bag snagged the line drive and stepped on the base for the double play to end the inning.
Again in the eighth, the Owls would strand runners on the corners and would strand five on the day.
UL took advantage of a scoring opportunity in the seventh inning to tie the contest. After a walk, Lucroy triple to plate the tying run. In the eighth inning, the Ragin' Cajuns loaded the bases before Brandon Cooney struck out two batters to end the inning.
He wasn't as fortunate in the ninth inning. With two outs Cooney loaded the bases before walking home with winning run. Cooney falls to 2-4 on the year.
FAU will play a Tuesday contest against Harvard before resuming Sun Belt Conference play next weekend against Arkansas State at FAU Stadium.
