Chris Salberg tied his career high with 11 strikeouts and the Florida Atlantic University offense put together 12 hits but could not overcome a seven run-inning by Troy University on Sunday afternoon. The Owls fell to the Trojans 13-5 in the final game of the Sun Belt Conference series.
After both teams put a run on the board in the second inning, the Trojans (13-8, 4-2 SBC) jumped out with seven runs in the third inning on four hits and three walks. The Owls tried to rebound with two runs in the fifth on back-to-back homers by Robbie Widlansky and Mike McKenna. The two accomplished the same feat on Friday when they went back-to-back against Troy.
The Owls (17-7, 2-4 SBC) pushed another run across in the seventh inning but left the bases loaded and Troy regained the momentum and put four runs on the board in the eighth. Preseason Sun Belt Player of the Year recorded a two-run homer in the frame. Dew finished 3-for-6 with three RBI.
Daniel Bomback paced the Owls with a 3-for-5 day, while Daniel Cook led the team with two RBI.
Tim Wheeler (2-1) earned the win for Troy after he worked five innings and allowed three runs on five hits and recorded five strikeouts. Brandon Cooney suffered the loss to fall to 2-3 after 2 1/3 innings. He gave up six runs on four hits.
FAU will play Dartmouth on Wednesday at 4 p.m. before returning to conference play next weekend. The team will travel to Louisiana-Lafayette for a three-game series.
