BOCA RATON, FL (February 13, 2007) - The Florida Atlantic University softball team will host its second tournament of the season this weekend as the FAU Classic is set to begin on Friday.
Michigan, Maryland, St. John's, Long Island and East Carolina will round out the field, with the Owls guaranteed to play everyone except Maryland.
Jen Musillo was the only Owl pitcher to make two appearances last weekend at the Miken Invitational. The senior threw 11 innings without giving up an earned run on 10 hits and struck out 11. Kathryn Stauffer threw a seven-inning shutout of her own over the weekend, and the pitching staff as a whole gave up just eight runs in 33 innings (1.70 ERA). Opponents batted just .222 off FAU hurlers, but six wild pitches hurt the staff in key situations.
At the plate, Becky Brandies hit .417 (5-for-12) to lead the team over the weekend, while Mandie Fishback was 6-for-16 (.375) with a double, home run and four RBI. Charlotte Baird, Blair Bodenmiller and Musillo also homered. Amy Bukovich and Ambar Jones tied Fishback with four RBI. The Owls hit .271 as a team with a .414 team slugging percentage and are 5-for-6 in stolen base attempts.
Defensively, six errors on the weekend cost the team four unearned runs, including all three in the championship game against South Carolina. Strong play in the field will be critical against a tough field that features.
Michigan is ranked no. 11 in the January 24 NFCA Coaches Poll with 400 points. FAU also received votes and accumulated 14 points.
As part of the weekend's festivities, the Owls will be looking to "Strike Out Cancer" as they increase Breast Cancer awareness. Fans, players and coaches are encouraged to support the fight against cancer by wearing pink. Donations will also be accepted to support the fight.
Additionally, the first 50 fans for Friday's game against St. John's at 6 p.m. will receive a coupon for a free hot dog.
