The Florida Atlantic University football team began their preparation in earnest for Saturday's clash with Florida International on Tuesday. The game will be one of the last contests played at the Orange Bowl, and FAU needs a win to stay alive in the Sun Belt conference race.
The offense worked on a combination of passes, runs and shotgun sets. Rusty Smith was able to hit Jason Harmon and Rob Housler on short passes. B.J. Manley broke free on a couple of runs. Practice ended in darkness at the FAU field, and on the last play of team drills, Smith hit Housler on an in route as the sprinklers went off on the FAU practice field.
On the other side, the defense worked to improve on last Saturday's effort against Florida. The front four was able to get pressure on the scout team quarterbacks during team workouts, led by Jermaine Council. Robert St. Clair was able to get in the backfield for a couple of sacks.
Florida Atlantic faces FIU on Saturday at the Orange Bowl at 7 p.m. Tickets are still available and can be purchased by calling the FIU ticket office at 1-866-FIU-GAME. The Owl Club and the FAU National Alumni Association will host a pre-game tailgate party at the end zone of the Orange Bowl, beginning at 5 p.m. Saturday afternoon, Head Coach Howard Schnellenberger will host the coaches' breakfast, beginning at 8 a.m. at the Founders' Lounge of the Tom Oxley Athletic Center. Breakfast will be provided free by Dunkin' Donuts. Coach Schnellenberger and his assistants will be on hand to give a scouting report of Saturday's game with FIU.
