The week of the Florida game has finally arrived for the Florida Atlantic University football team. FAU practiced late Tuesday on the turf field after a brief heavy downpour forced them off of the Oxley Center practice field.
The offense went to work on their usual sets. Rusty Smith and the offense worked on first down plays and passes out of the backfield. Smith hit B.J. Manley on a couple of short passes and William Rose broke loose for a couple of long runs. Sean Clayton spent time working with the second unit on the goal-line offense.
The defensive unit got a chance to stop Urban Meyer's spread offense. Two quarterbacks simulated Florida quarterback Tim Tebow's movements as the defense got a look at what they'll see on Saturday. The secondary got most of the workout during team drills, as Kris Bartels knocked down a couple of passes.
For many FAU players, such as quarterback Rusty Smith, playing at the swamp will be a surreal experience.
"It's going to be amazing," said Smith. "I've been a spectator many, many times and now I'm going to actually going to be one of the guys who will be down on the field."
The FAU Owls face the Florida Gators on Saturday at 12 p.m. The game can be seen on pay-per-view to viewers of participating cable and satellite outlets throughout Florida. The game can also be heard in South Florida on WMEN-AM 640. The Owl Club will host their official watch party at Coyote Jack's on the FAU Boca Raton Campus, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton beginning at 11:30 a.m. There will be free appetizers and drink specials throughout the game, and there will be a giveaway for a chance to win tickets to the FAU game against Troy on December 1st.
