BOCA RATON, FL - The pregame ceremony honoring the senior class proved to be a foreshadowing of things to come as the Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team defeated Arkansas State 5-0 on Sunday.
The Owls (8-7-2, 5-4-1 Sun Belt) recognized seniors Taylor Browning, Monique Cabrera, Michele Fazzari, Susanna Lehtinen and Alicia Tirelli before the match and the honorees took full advantage of playing their final match before a home crowd. Tirelli began the onslaught early with a goal past ASU keeper Brielan Smiechowski off of a beautiful touch pass by Anhnhi Tran in the third minute. Lehtinen scored the next two Owl goals, the first on a cross from Janelle Blake and the second on a blast from 15 yards out to the top of the ASU net.
Fazzari posted the last two scores of the match. Jannica Tjeder found Fazzari behind the Indian defense in the 57th minute and Fazzari tipped the ball into the net to make the score 4-0. Fazzari and Lehtinen hooked up for the final tally of the afternoon as Lehtinen crossed the ball to Fazzari and Fazzari headed the ball just inside the post to provide the final margin of victory.
The senior class scored all five goals and recorded 11 of the team's 14 points on the day.
The Owls return to action on Friday when they travel to Miami to take on rival Florida International. The match will start at 7 p.m.
