Denver, CO - Three Owls scored in double-digits, but a fifty percent shooting night for Denver University was too much for Florida Atlantic to overcome, in a 76-60 defeat on Thursday.
"We got better the last eight minutes of the game," said Head Coach Chancellor Dugan. "If we can take that intensity for forty minutes we'll find ways to win games."
Brittney Crenshaw had 12 points on 5-of-12 shooting from the field. Her 13 rebounds were a season-high and gave the sophomore her second double-double of her career.
The contest began with neither team scoring a point until Demina Anderson hit a layup with 17:06 left in the first. FAU built its biggest lead of 8-4 at the 13:41 mark, before Denver came back and took its first advantage 11-10 with just under 10 minutes left. The Pioneers used a 12-5 run to end the opening half with a 32-24 advantage. Florida Atlantic had 14 turnovers in the first frame.
In the second half Denver flew out of the gates with a 15-4 run, and led 46-28 at the 14:24 mark. The Pioneers would maintain at least an 18-point lead for the next eight minutes, building their biggest advantage of 25 with 8:36 left after a Megan Givens triple.
Down by 24 points with 6:00 minutes to play, FAU put together its best stretch of basketball of the day. The Owls mounted a 15-3 run that featured six steals and five points from senior Mistoria Brown. At the two minute mark the Owls had the ball down 68-56, but put the Pioneers came up with a turnover and hit eight free throws to pad their victory.
Brown paced the Owls with a team-high 13 points to go along with seven rebounds. Anderson scored in double-digits for the second straight game with 10 points on a 5-of-9 shooting effort. Florida Atlantic won the rebounding battle 43-37.
Denver was led in scoring by Cole's 22 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Sara Benham finished in double digits with 14 points as well. The Pioneers hit 19-of-26 shots from the charity stripe compared to the Owls 6-of-13 mark.
The Owls will finish up its two-game road swing with a game this Saturday against North Texas at 6 p.m. eastern in Denton, TX. All games this season can be heard for free on fausports.com.
