Ellie Weberg swam well in her first ConocoPhillips National Championships event. On Thursday, the Florida Atlantic University swimmer placed fifth in the 100-meter breaststroke in Irvine, CA. The senior now has a shot at being named to one of five international teams.
After swimming a 1:10.36 in the prelims on Thursday morning, Weberg returned for the A final in the evening. The Bloomington, MN native then swam a 1:09.94 to take fifth place behind the top three Americans of all time in the event. The current American record holder, Jessica Hardy, former American record-holder Megan Jendrick and 2000 Olympic gold medalist Tara Kirk took the top three spots followed by Michelle McKeehan in fourth.
"Ellie swam well," said head coach Steve Eckelkamp. "She was able to break the 1:10 barrier in the finals, which puts her into an elite class."
Weberg now has a chance of being named to the 2006 Mutual of Omaha Pan Pacific Championships, 2007 FINA World Championships, 2007 Mutual of Omaha Duel in the Pool, 2007 World University Games or the 2007 Pam American Games. The teams will be announced in late September.
On Saturday, Weberg will swim in her final event of the National Championships when she participates in the 200-meter breaststroke.
