Boca Raton, FL - Howard Schnellenberger has announced Rusty Smith as Florida Atlantic University's opening day starter.
"It was a very close decision to make, almost as close as it could get," said Schnellenberger. "The fact that Rusty made such extraordinary progress in the spring and fall makes us think he's our best option out there."
Smith came to FAU in the fall of 2005 and spent the season learning the system. Smith then entered spring practice with a three-way race.
Following the spring season, the number one signal caller spot was too close to call. The two received similar opportunities throughout preseason camp.
Following Saturday's scrimmage a clear cut starter had not been determined. Schnellenberger met with both quarterbacks Sunday and with the team prior to Monday's practice.
NOTES:
Monday on the practice field, Florida Atlantic University took their first peak at the Clemson Tigers playbook.
The afternoon started with each unit walking through the Clemson plays. Afterward, the offense and defense split up to either work on the inside drill or one-on-one passing with the receivers.
In the seven-on-seven set, Carldayle Brantley came up with a pick. Rob Housler made his presence known with a 20-yard reception. Sean Clayton connected on a sideline pass to Chris Bonner.
During the 11-on-11 drill, several players had solid performances. Rusty Smith hit Jason Harmon on a bootleg for 10-yards. David Muniz rumbled through the middle for a five-yard gain. DiIvory Edgecomb ripped through a seam on the left side for close to 15-yards.
After practice, the walk-ons had try-outs. The Owls will be back on the field tomorrow for practice at 4 p.m.
