BOCA RATON, FL -- The midweek practice came to a close in week two of spring practice for the Florida Atlantic University football team on Wednesday with a slightly different look: the kicking game got some live work.
Following a spirited seven-on-seven drill and a full squad limited scrimmage, the field goal unit took to the field where the kicker on the 2006 squad has yet to be decided. It will be a close battle to watch through the rest of spring practice, and into the start of fall practice as well.
Earlier, during the limited scrimmage, the defense dominated early on, including an interception return for a touchdown by linebackerFrantz Joseph. McKinson Souverain hooked up with wideout Cortez Gent on a sideline fly route for a score to turn the tide in favor of the offense a few plays later. Following that play the offense reacted with several strong efforts, including strong running by DiIvory Edgecomb and Charles Pierre.
During the goal line portion of the session, the defense held strong for several plays, until Rusty Smith found wide receiver Chris Bonner in the corner of the end zone for a score.
"The offense won some battles today that they hadn't won [previously]," head coach Howard Schnellenberger said.
Schnellenberger was encouraged after viewing the tape of last weekend's scrimmage, but said while there were a lot of positives, one negative had to be eliminated.
"We can't fumble the ball from center, we can't fumble the ball anywhere," he said.
The Owls will return to the practice field on Friday at 3:30 p.m. The team will then hold a scrimmage on Saturday at 2 p.m., at the Tom Oxley athletic fields to wrap up week two of spring practice.
