Campbell University avoided a series sweep by taking the second game of a doubleheader 7-3 at Florida Atlantic University on Saturday afternoon. The Owls took game one 11-8 behind a 3-for-3 performance from Jordan Hafer.
In six trips to the plate in game one, Hafer (Deerfield Beach, FL) reached base six times. In his first two plate appearances he picked up doubles. After his double in the third inning, the outfielder scored on an RBI walk by Alex Silversmith. Tyler Stevens drove in the second run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to right field.
Hafer gave the Owls a 6-3 lead in the fourth inning with a three-run homer. In his next three trips to the plate he picked up two walks and was hit by a pitch.
A fifth run sixth inning put Florida Atlantic back on top of the Camels after they scored five runs in the five innings. Two of the runs came on a two-run homer by Jacob Allen.
The first four runners for FAU reached base in the sixth. The third batter, Tim Mascia drove home three-runs with his second homer of the season. Stevens picked up his second RBI of the contest on a single up the middle and Nick Arata pushed FAU's 11th run across the plate with a single of his own.
Jonathon Walker (1-4) started the contest for Campbell and gave up three runs on four hits in his three innings of work. Relievers Clayton Pittman, Carlton Floyd and Jeff Randol were charged with the remaining eight runs.
Chris Salberg started for the Owls (16-15, 5-7 A-Sun) and worked four innings. The left-hander gave up four earned runs in four innings and struck out five. Joel Schmal (4-2) earned the win out of the bullpen after he worked 3 2/3 innings. The two runs that he gave up came on the home run by Allen.
Six FAU players finished with multiple hits to lead to FAU's 14 hits.
The timely hits disappeared in game two for Florida Atlantic as the team fell behind 3-0 early. The team squandered a scoring chance in the first inning as Campbell starting pitcher Quinn LeSage picked up one of his four strikeouts with the bases loaded to end the FAU threat.
Campbell (9-19, 4-8 A-Sun) picked up three runs off of FAU's Brandon Cooney (Pembroke Pines, FL). Cooney (1-4) suffered the loss after he allowed three runs on sevens hits in six innings. The junior struck out a career-high seven batters in his outing.
Despite Cooney's effort, CU's LePage controlled FAU's offense to pick up the win. He gave up only one run through the first eight innings and then ran into a little trouble in the ninth to be relieved.
LePage struck out four to improve to 2-1 on the year.
FAU will remain at home for the fifth game of an eigth game homestand on Tuesday against Florida International. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
