Andrew Tomlin threw 3 1/3 innings of relief for Florida Atlantic University to pick his first win of the season. The junior did not allow a hit while striking out seven as FAU defeated Monmouth University 7-5 Tuesday night at FAU Stadium. He was supported by an Owls' offense that picked up 14 hits.
Most of FAU's offense came in the first three innings as the team rallied for six runs. Monmouth starter Gregg Petillo was pegged for six runs and nine hits in his two innings of work as he suffered the loss.
Monmouth relievers Nick Meyers and Justin Esposito quieted the FAU bats in the final six innings and only allowed one run.
Mike McKenna tallied a game-high three hits and added two RBI, while Ovy Ramirez led the team with three RBI to raise his season total to 15.
Alex Pepe made his first collegiate start against the Hawks. After making it through the first two innings unscathed, the freshman allowed three runs in the third after issuing three walks. Pepe finished the night with 4 2/3 innings of work and allowed five runs on six hits and struck out two.
Mike Crotta pitched the ninth inning to pick up his second save of the season in as many games. He struck out two and did not allow a hit.
With the win, FAU evens its record at 8-8 while Monmouth drops to 1-6.
The Owls will face A-Sun foe Mercer this weekend in the opening series of the conference action in Mercer. The Bears have knocked off two no. 1 teams this season and hold a 10-7 record. A doubleheader is scheduled for Friday at 4 p.m. with a single game to follow on Saturday at noon.
