Despite striking out a season-high 13 batters, Florida Atlantic University dropped a 10-5 contest to no.21 Texas Christian University Saturday afternoon at Lupton Stadium.
FAU (6-8) struck in the first as Tim Mascia led off the first with a base hit down the left field line before Ovy Ramirez drove home the first run of the contest with a double down the left field line.
The Frogs (8-5) countered with four runs on four hits in the second. After giving up a leadoff hit, Chris Salberg allowed a walk to put a runner in scoring position. He then recorded the next two outs before TCU posted four runs with two outs on a walk and three singles.
Justin Martin delivered a home run in the third inning to bring FAU within two runs. The homer is his second of the season and second in his last three at bats. A double by Mascia put another runner in scoring position. He moved over to third base on a Ramirez bunt base hit and crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly off of the bat of Anthony Albano.
Salberg (2-2) settled down in the third and struck out the side before a leadoff triple in the fourth led to another TCU run. After getting out of the jam and leaving the bases loaded with Frogs, Salberg struck out another two in the fifth for a career-high nine strikeouts.
The junior left-handed pitcher threw five innings and allowed six runs on six hits and eight walks, while striking out nine.
Will Mann, Brett Cannon and Joel Schmal all worked in relief and combined for four runs on eight hits and four strikeouts.
Sam Demel (1-2) held the FAU offense in check by recording six straight strikeouts until he allowed his first walk of the game in the sixth inning. He finished the contest with a career-high 14 strikeouts to earn his first win of the year. He threw seven innings and allowed three runs on six hits and two walks.
Zach Ashwood entered in relief for Demel and Albano welcomed him to the game with a triple to centerfield. Pinch hitter, Tyler Stevens drove home FAU's fourth run of the game with a single.
The Owls threatened again in the ninth by loading the bases off of Brent Allar. Albano picked up his second RBI of the night by drawing a walk. A double play and a strikeout ended FAU's threat as the Owls left 10 on base for the night.
Keith Conlon and Andrew Walker led the Horned Frogs with three hits apiece and Walker collected three RBI.
The final game of the series will be on Sunday at 2 p.m. et before FAU returns to Boca Raton to face Monmouth University on Tuesday.
