BOCA RATON, FL - Coming off a 3-2 weekend in their second tournament of the year, the Florida Atlantic softball team will hit the road for the first time this season, traveling to Columbus, Ga. to participate in the NFCA Classic.
The Owls, who defeated Mississippi twice and Missouri State once over the weekend, will face national powers Florida (7-5) and Nebraska (4-1), as well as Big Ten foe Illinois, during their three-day visit to the Peach State. The action opens for FAU on Friday, Feb. 24 at 5:00 p.m. with Nebraska, followed by Florida at 7:30.
The Owls (4-6) battle the Illini (4-5) on Saturday morning at 10:00 before moving into bracket play later that day and into Sunday.
Youth continues to be a big factor for the Owls, as freshman Vanessa Suarez (Orange Park, Fla.) recorded her first two collegiate victories over the weekend, one in relief and one in her first start of the year. Classmate Kathryn Stauffer (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) pitched a 3-0 shutout of Ole Miss in Friday's opener and recorded the save in Sunday's game with the Rebels, a 5-3 final.
Another frosh - Becky Brandies (Madison, Fla.) - sparked a comeback against Missouri State on Friday with her first home run, helping FAU overcome a 4-0 deficit for a 9-8 win in 10 innings.
Nebraska and Florida were both ranked in the preseason top 25. The Cornhuskers have wins over perennial softball giants Cal State-Northridge and Oregon State and suffered their only loss against the nation's seventh-ranked team from Stanford.
Florida handed defending National Champion Michigan its first loss of the year 3-2 over the weekend. The Gators have also lost to the Wolverines this year, as well as PAC-10 contender Oregon and Big East favorite DePaul.
Illinois has yet to record a significant win this season and has taken losses at the hands of PAC-10 powers California 6-4 and Oregon State 15-7.
Junior Shauna Corso (Seal Beach, Calif.) leads FAU with a .400 average. Classmate Mandie Fishback (Banks, Oregon) has two doubles, two triples and five RBIs on the season.
