MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Florida Atlantic's softball team needed just five hits to score double digit runs in a 10-1 victory over Memphis on Friday evening to open the three-game series.
The Owls (30-17, 11-11) recorded their 11th run-rule victory and nearly shut out the Tigers (17-34, 5-17).
Senior pitcher
Autumn Courtney recorded her American Conference-best 16th win of the season and delivered a six-strikeout performance while allowing no runs.
THE BEGINNING
Each of the first four Owl batters of the game reached base and ended up scoring a run.
After forcing a pitching change after the first inning, Florida Atlantic scored on back-to-back bases-loaded walks in the top of the second to extend its lead to 6-0.
THE TURNING POINT
The Owls scored three more in the top of the third, with three consecutive walks leading to a sacrifice fly RBI by senior third baseman
Jesiana Mora followed by a single from senior catcher
Chloe Yeatts to drive in two for a 9-0 lead.
Memphis loaded the bases in the bottom frame before Courtney's fourth strikeout of the day ended the inning without any Tiger runs.
THE FINISH
After a double from senior first baseman
Yani Guzman to lead off the fourth, she capitalized on a Tigers error to score and put 10 runs on the board.
Courtney worked her way out of another bases loaded jam in the bottom of the fourth and was relieved by senior pitcher
Jaden Martinez in the fifth. Memphis crossed home plate once, but it was not enough to avoid the run rule.
